The Kalalau Trail is a trail along Nā Pali Coast of the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii. The trail runs approximately 11 miles (18 km) along the island’s north. The last time I hiked the Kalalau Trail, I took my GPS to record the trail and make a map of it. If you have Google Earth installed, click this link to. As you approach Kalalau, there will trzil steep downward decent along Red Hill that will lead down closer to sea level. Also, a portion of the Kalalau Trail is shown as a black line. Road after Hanalei closed till November at least. Fantastic views, muddy in wintertime, nur worth it. The Hanakapiai Teail Trail learn more. Total elevation gain going and returning along all inclines between Kee and Hanakapiai is 1, ft. Native and introduced tropical plant species abound. Even in the summertime, when the beach is deep with white sand, people sometimes venture along the lava rock shelves on both ends of the beach.
Infrequent widespread storms cause flash floods. Portions of the trail in this section are very traail and the drop-off on the ocean side is severe.
Take two weeks if you need to.

Hiking the Kalalau Trail is recommended for advanced hikers and after the first couple miles you will understand why. Kalalau is an amazing place; it used to be home to over 6, indigenous people who lived sustainably off the land. There are great views of the Pacific here, as well as majestic jungle mountain views.
If you’re in doubt about your skills or if you just want to enjoy your time with the company of knowledgeable locals, we highly recommend contacting them. No body wants to see anyone get hurt.
Also, how long do you think it will take us to hike then entire 11 miles in one day? Get an early start to avoid overexertion in the midday heat. I can’t begin to say enough about the beauty of Na Pali.
Shoes take on water early and you’ll be sloshing around all day -we carried all of our water in, next time I’d bring a filter or tablets to grab water on the way -you can leave your stuff anywhere on the beach at Kalalau.
Known for its beauty and danger, the Kalalau Trail follows the rugged coastline on the north-west shore of the garden island of Hawaii, and eventually ends at the secluded Kalalau Beach.
The upper half of this trail should be hiked only in good weather to avoid dangerous flash floods and falling rocks. The narrow trail, three major stream crossings that can rapidly rise when raining, and falling rock have been cited as reasons for why the trail is one of the most dangerous in the world.
If you start early in the morning ,alalau we did, and have experience hiking technical terrain, you can certainly make the entire hike in one day.
There are mostly grasses, shrubs, ti plants, and hala pandanus trees along that stretch, with an occasional agave. We didn’t have trekking poles but really missed them when trying to kslalau from sliding off a muddy cliff.
Do you have suggestions on books where to get guides on this tfail of hiking. At the half way grail mark, before turning around, make sure to dip in the creek – it is magical. The trail curves in and out of the many ridges that reach to the ocean, and then slowly works its way back down to Hanakapi’ai Beach, which is the halfway point in!

Make sure to bring a hammock. Violation of this rule is a petty misdemeanor under Hawaii law, and a conviction will result in a criminal record in addition to penalties.
Permits are currently not for sale. Are there other long hikes on the island that you all like?
That said, I did see some hikers go off-trail last time I hiked it, so I guess it happens. You need to have electolytes when sweating so much, so make sure you add to your water. Mile 6 going in is the best place to get water before mile kalaalau I feel like people make a big deal about that stuff more to seem extreme or daring than to warn people.

After doing a good bit of climbing, you’ll come to Space Rock, the highest point anywhere on the Kalalau trail, approximately ft.
