Originally published in Romanian inthis semiautobiographical novel by the world renowned scholar Mircea Eliade details the passionate awakenings of Alain, nigbts ambitious young French engineer flush with colonial pride and prejudice and full of a European fascination with the mysterious subcontinent.
Alain, Eliade’s persona in the story, comes to take up residence with an Indian family who have a sublime, mysteriously beautiful daughter, Maitreyi.
It Does Not Die is a meditation on memory, and investigation of motivation, a study of the tragedy of self-delusion, and, in the end, a profound philosophical statement on Love and Truth. Don’t read this book. But at first sight, between him and Maitreyi there is a kind of coupe de foudre.

I feel pitty for the human race, for all the stupidity that it bears with so much ,ircea and arrogance, for the immense amount of pain and suffering we put one another through each day, for all the superstitions you – not me, not anymore – live your lives by with so much credulity and zeal, for all the little differences that keep us from seeing our much more obvious things we have in common.
Many of his scholarly works, as well as his two-volume autobiography and four-volume journal, are published by the University of Chicago Press. Will they then understand my suffering? The author masked his own identity in the book yet he mentioned Maitreyi’s very clearly and even used an identifier He mentions her association with Tagore’s protegee. This is one of the best Romanian books I’ve read, an impressive and interesting book. Much to consider, and as Alain says early in the novel of his love for Maitreyi, he can’t describe it, because describing it will somehow corrupt it, paraphrased here.

I didn’t get bored, but that still doesn’t qualify the story with much merit. Ever since he begun to love Maitreyi, Allan was trying to find her defects but eventually despite the differences in race, religion, origin they will be together.
As well, she contacts the now old man and he agrees his novel will not be published in English until after her death.
