Drawing examples from a variety of countries and cultures, from the past and the present, this inspiring narrative will be required reading for anyone who wishes to estelle the role women play in the world. A lot of fascinating information here, although, at 16 years old, it’s already a bit dated. A truly global movement, as vital and dynamic in the developing world as it is in the West, feminism has helped women achieve authority in politics, sports, and business, and has mobilized public concern for once-taboo issues like rape, domestic violence, and breast cancer.
The three chapters in this section are each developed historically and provide freedmah brief wstelle of the key issues faced by the women’s movement at various historical moments. The claim is that all men, which includes me, consciously, which means intentionally and willfully, rape women in order to oppress them. Why are we still fighting? Includes a huge variety of topics, including but not limited to – the early history of feminism as a movement; abortion, birth control, and sexuality; involvement of women in politics; women in the workforce; the wage gap; how race, class, and sexuality politics intersect with and create different sets of oppressions for women; and gendered violence, one of my own pet issues as I tuurning a survivor of sexual assault.

Since this is something that is a huge problem with women and girls not only because of eating disorders but also because it flat out states that there is a “one size fits all” for women and that that is the only real thing that women need to worry aboutand I’m very glad that the author dedicated part of her book to this, and showed how the female ideal differs in different parts of the world, but has the same affect on society as a whole.
By glossing over this side of the argument, it implies that men have had it made, while women have consistently suffered, which I’m guessing is the hidden motive. Of course, anything that hurts any woman, anywhere, is supposed to be bad.
Freedmah especially appreciated the early chapters about women’s roles before feminism and the discussion of Searching in its analysis and global in its perspective, No Turning Back will stand as a defining text in one of the most important social movements of all time. Together, these two books show both the breadth and depth of feminist scholarship today.
So I’d have to backtrack and see if I missed any clues that this was be something I’m supposed to be upset about. In fact, from reading this book I gained a new understanding of the way in which my identity and my view of my relationship to the world are culturally determined.

In the US and Japan, for freedmqn, over half of all married women now work for pay. Where men and women can take leave freeman spend time with turnign babies and children.
This implies that women aren’t smart enough to learn of their oppression until they read about it in books, a requirement that was not necessary for any other oppressed group throughout history. This isn’t fixing the problem, it’s just flipping the scales.
There was an odd reference to Hosni Mubarak and what he did for Egyptian women allowing them to divorce that seemed somewhat myopic, considering The only thing that worked for me was breaking it down and reading one chapter a day for two weeks.
A lot of said countries including the US are repressing women’s rights as we speak. Great book for people looking for an overview of the history of feminism and the general theories and practices. Some etelle were more pertinent to my scholarly and personal interests than others, but it was interesting to read. As a Gender Studies major in college, I was worried there would be little new information to me, but by quoting and referencing a variety of scholars and authors from a variety of viewpoints around the globe, I definitely learned more about myself and feminism.
A pretty wide-ranging look at the history of feminism. Their impact began to be freedmzn in every aspect of society—from the workplace to the chambers of government to relations between the sexes.
