This book is a book that I have been waiting to finish since Mar 27, Che Howes rated it it was amazing. And I’m tickling the trigger. Price may vary by retailer. The closing prose—an examination of the past, present and possible future of hip-hop as it will be defined by all MCs—is must read material for anyone who has fallen in and out scrollss love with hip-hop.

The book seems to be more geared towards those already familiar with hip-hop. Some of the poems are too short to be stand-alone pieces, but somehow, all in all, it was OKish. Want to Read saving….

This is the book that finished me. Saul Stacey Williams is an American poet, writer, actor and musician known for his blend of poetry and hip-hop and for his leading role in the independent scrolsl Slam. It is these poems that he credits with his rise in the Slam Poetry world and many of them will be familiar to anyone who has listened to his cds.

Jan 29, Sean rated it really liked it. It’s a great story, and becomes even better when he starts talking about his travails in deciphering the coded language found therein anyone who’s ever tried to puzzle out graffiti tags will be able to identify.
These writings span Williams’ artistic life sinceincluding journaling that charts his experiences in a clear, truthful hand, in spite of some metaphysical wanderings. On paper, however, and in my scolls hands, the words turn to dust. The book is about more than hip-hop though. This is the book that fmcee me.
It’s closer to an embodiment of the gangsta archetype Williams so often rejects, and a tantalizing glimpse into an alternate universe: These are just not as strong as the poems in his other two books “she” and “said the shotgun to the head”. The story I am about to tell may sound fantastic. I have paraded as a poet for years now. It’s a piece that scrols to be political and personal, transcendental and introspective, joyful and furious.

It’s a nice collection of them in one place though. For every glowing endorsement like the back-cover quotes — “he challenges us to be scrolks says Russell Simmons — he has a detractor; in his intense focus on the cultural battle for the soul of the young black male, especially with regards to the role of hip-hop in shaping said soul’s worldview, Williams at times swoops dangerously close to losing relevance, tirade after impassioned tirade turning him into the homeless man with the “repent the end is near” sign or, worse, the crazed, grizzled old man in the corner that nobody listens to.
Read more Read less. He has a way with imagery and a gift for language, and even when his preaching can grow tiresome or heavy-handed the underlying message is still important. Father, son in emccee. There were some interesting aphorisms by Saul Williams, and it definitely helped me understand hip-hop a little bit more from a different perspective, an insider perspective from a slammer.
In my opinion, the abstract nature of some of the poetry lost me and didn’t quite connect the punch lines.
