It was said that one of them, either the actor or the history teacher, was superfluous in this world, but you weren’t, you weren’t superfluous, there is no duplicate of you to come and replace you at your mother’s side, you were unique, just as every ordinary person is unique, truly unique.

I did not really enjoy Saramago’s The Double.

Even the author’s tendency to combine what ought to be three pages of dialogue into one run-on sentence strung along by obsessively linked commas feels natural and comprehensible after the first few instances. This felt kind of like a more sinister “The Parent Trap” or dropped episode of The Twilight Zone dropped for being too long maybe. Do not judge my nerdiness.

But at the end of the book I just felt that it was marginal: We hear the theme played out first when the professor Adam Bell teaches his college history students about totalitarianism and how dictators strive to remove our uniqueness. Gostei muito, muito mesmo desta releitura, contudo falta-lhe alguma coisa para ser dona wl brilhantismo e da magistralidade de Memorial do Convento ou Ensaio sobre a cegueira.

Once again Saramago creates a situation in which to explore the oddness of being alive and knowing it. While watching the movies he notices that one of the extras in the movie is his exact double!
