Barring these classic works, I haven’t really bothered with verse, especially when it comes to modern writers. Vikram Seth, a great poet.

The book contains ten tales in verse, written by Seth on a day that was too hot for him to concentrate on his work. The reader will put the book down drowned in thoughts. Seth’s poetry actually reminds me of Roald Dahl’s fabulously funny verses from his book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Beastly tales from here and there. His first full-fledged verse work and its quite brilliant. Keep this for one of those rainy days literally! And so it went on until all ten of these beastly tales were born”.

You will meet again the tortoise and the hare, and you may recognize the greedy crocodile, but there are other tales with characters not so familiar with strange names and traits, but each with a message that can be comprehended by young and old.

Beastly Tales from Here and There
I enjoyed “Beastly Tales”. That’s what I am doing.
The voices of these animals are so strong and impressive that one simply cannot finish the book without being affected. We read this over a period of a few months, dipping into it every now and then, so perhaps if we’d have read it a bit more regularly it wouldn’t have felt as one trick ponyish. The stories resemble Aesop’s fables and that delights the reader. Which is why, this quite simply escaped me and in any case, I’m yet to really sink my teeth into any of Vikram Seth’s works.
While two of the stories come from India, there are other fables taken from China, Ukraine and Greece.

However, the effect and impact wanes a little through the 10 tales and since the last is the longest it felt a little bit of a chore to finish.
