The entire story is written with an emotionless attention to detail bordering robve-grillet obsessive. Half the hair hangs down the back, the other hand pulls the other half over one shoulder.

Will the emotion unexpressed suddenly become uncontrollable? Instead, one slowly pieces together the story and the emotional experience of jealousy in the repetition of descriptions, the attention to odd details, and the breaks in repetitions. This is already implied by the tightening spiral robbe-grillwt of temporality whereby repetitions and close-ups escalate until the book finishes in a grand flourish of reverse perspective at its starting point: Avec le recul, je me dis que j’aurais du imaginer un roman de Robbe-Grillet.

The novel would probably not be to the taste of many readers, but I am certainly glad I read it. Repeat ad nauseam in fragmentary, temporally disjointed ways, then mix in some nonsense about geometric arrangements of banana trees and the quotidian movement of a column’s shadow and that’s pretty much this novel in a nutshell.
To some extent, they’ve been lost in translation. The variations are extremely numerous; the variations of these, still more so.
