It contains such gems as: Pirenne is best remembered, however, for the “Pirenne thesis” about the foundations of European civilization, which als put forth in his work Mohammed and Charlemagne. Pirenne was one of the world’s leading historians and arguably the most famous Belgium had produced. Most of these settlements were near the old episcopal cities, or outside the castles of the old aristocracy.
He would not have been able to compress this extended history into pages of a A delightful little book. First of all, this book is a readable introduction to the non-academic reader, for whom some of these details may not matter as much. Henri Pirenne was a leading Belgian historian.
