FYI this is a high voltage transistor designed for switching operation, very commonly found in compact fluorescent lamps. The alternative is that the P side must be at least more positive than the N side respectively.

Jj you have a DMM, you should read something like megaohms between a forward biased base-collectopr and a forward biased base-emitter.

Want to add to the discussion? 1302 should read open circuit or beyond the measurement of your DMM in ohms for reverse biased base-collector or base-emitter. Doing so would actually improve your knowledge and and your soldering skill and get you some really cheap tools, although DMMs these days aren’t very expensive.

Basically, you create a circuit that needs the transistor to behave with X amount of gain otherwise the current is too weak to light the LED.

Transistors function in their active region as class A amplifiers thanks to the base-collector being reverse biased while the base-emitter is forward biased. With a DMM, you can test the legs and each pair that has low resistance is a forward biased junction, any pair that has high resistance is a reverse biased junction.

I don’t have a DMM but I’ll have to look into it. But I’m not positive it was the right datasheet.

It’s dead, you need a new transistor. This is a transistor diode tester. In NPN, the opposite is true.

If the LED still lights up, then the legs are of a diode in ‘proper orientation’. The base must also be negative with respect to collector and current will flow.

Please read this first! Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. If the LED does not light up, then reverse the two legs and if it lights up, you now have one jh. For instance, a beta gain transistor circuit would light up one LED if the gain is overa different LED if its over but underand so on.

When the voltage rises high enough it would activate the junction and conduct. Submit a new text post. In a PNP, the base is the N, so it must be negative with respect to the emitter and it will be biased and current will flow.

1302 Thank you my friend, this is very helpful. So I’m attempting my first pedal, and I’m totally new to electronics altogether. Info about building and modding: You will, of course, read the same unreadably high ohm resistance between collector-emitter regardless of bias.

If you don’t have a DMM, use ohms law to build this. Im going to assume the emitter is the large pad, so the base is going to be one of the others, and the collector is obviously the last.

I know the Base is typically in the middle, but i googled the numbers from the face,HJ, B1 and found a datasheet for the HJ Transistor, which said the Base was the leftmost leg.

Now amend that circuit jh that the negative side of the battery or ground if you want to call it is touching one leg of your transistor, and another leg is touching the LED. The silicon is normally bonded to the collector, which would match the ECB left to right, flat writing side facing you, pins facing downwards pinout of the CD I found this in a light bulb, but can’t tell which leg is which.

Put two of the legs between the LED. If you don’t have a DMM, use ohms law to build this https: Submit a new link. Welcome to Reddit, the front page of the internet. This is an open community hhj the do-it-yourself pedal builders of reddit!

I just cracked open this one hoping to illuminate which pin is which. Sorry if this is a very pedestrian question, Jh already tried my best on google: Not to worry, I have 2 exactly the same.

You can create your own test equipment for general guidelines if you’re creative. Then test the other two legs. C is probably the tiny pad, B is probably the long rail pad, and E is the large square pad.
