So I was pleased to find a copy of this book under the Christmas tree.
Confessions of a Conjuror by Derren Brown
And that is being kind when meeting famous people. I suspected his brilliance at what he does stemmed cofnessions life-long dedication to the art, and while there’s a bit of that, he also came across as having a normal for a posh person upbringing with usual insecurities and temptations of childhood, particularly being an only child for his first 9 years.
His recollections of a performance of a card trick to an audience in a Bristol restaurant some years ago before he found fame form the scaffolding onto which he hangs various digressions – psychological and philosophical flights of fancy. What follows is what can be best described as a summary, or in conclusionthat I will attempt to review the book like the back page blurb in one simple stilted grammatically simple paragraph…. I would say that, along with Tricks Of The Mind, this is a must read for everyone.
But, as I said, I’m a big fan. An interesting take on the standard celeb autobiography in which Derren uses a detailed description of a card trick brwon some years ago as the narrative thread, and drifting off at tangents as he is reminded of incidents from his early life, prompted to create random lists, chooses to name-drop just a little!
Ricky with comedian chums and eminent guests discuss the big browwn. Derren Brown Narrated by: We learn of Derren’s childhood, how he got into magic, where he lives, what his favourite playing cards are, even the books he I’m a big Derren Brown fan.
The whole thing seemed very disjointed, and he would flit from topic to topic with baffling segues. If you find yourself wanting to laugh and clap at the end, he got you ; Conjurr book to be heard, rather than read, as this strange version of an autobiography, is best presented by the author, whom happens to know his way with rhetoric: One has to be on the look-out for biographical gems that might drift past on a two-page footnote.
But both use this as a jumping off point for a stream of introspection that takes them through their lives.
By the end of the memoir he is still in that same room, having astonished a table of punters with a series of card tricks. But then again, so are most of us. There is some method given away here, but not much. The author has an extensive, varied vocabulary, which is put in good use. From these observations, he delves into his past life, future career, his methods, beliefs, sexuality, the wisdom of Aristophanes, and, for more than three pages, the perfect way to poach eggs.
What it doesn’t give is the story of a career but then I neither wanted nor expected that. Derren Brown is evidently a well read person, and this is shown in his powerful grasp of the English language. If, like me, you want to warp the minds of those around you, this is a great start, with further required reading in the bibliography such as Richard Dawkins The God Delusion — another controversial book, but essential nonetheless] It enlightens and entertains.

I challenge you to listen to this without guffawing out convessions I did within seconds. At page 91 I would have resisted all thoughts to ever saying hello or making awkward small talk if we met after a show or in a coffee shop.
Along the way he does briefly reveal some of the tricks of the trade – conjuring that is, not bottom-wiping. I have not laughed so hard by a drrren in a long, long time. Jul 24, Jeremy rated it liked it. The content is mostly Derren’s musings on a wide variety of topics, from the use of a handkerchief to the satisfaction conjkror closing a drawer with a snap. Like the films and books I enjoy it doesn’t move in w predictable straight line but uses the device of a card trick, performed in a Bristol restaurant, as the central thread from which dfrren launch off at various tangents.
At times this was an interesting and enjoyable book, and Derren makes exceptional use of the English Language, but I still can’t help feeling that I liked him more before listening to this Learn the key techniques behind successful hypnotism, including the preparation of your subject, inducing a trance and awakening your subject.
I need to focus on what I’m reading about, when it’s only how Derren looks for his pen, waits for the lift, what he reads on the loo or how he eats After Eights. Obsessed with magic and illusions since childhood, Derren’s life to date has been an extraordinary journey bdown here, in Confessions of a Conjuror, he allows us all to join him on a magical mystery tour – to the centre of his brain Aug 02, Marielle rated it it was amazing.
